Wargaming in the Third Imperium: GZG's FSE Legionnaires

I have some of GZG's FSE Legionnaires both with Kepi and with Helmet.
They wear what appears to be a hard armour vest, with shoulder guards and abdominal protection. In Traveller terms this is not quite Combat Armour, it could be classified as a Flak Jacket over fatigues or as a Combat Environment Suit. The personal weapon doesn't appear to have a magazine in the usual places, nor does it have an obvious power cable running to a power-pack. The stock appears to have something inset into it, perhaps a magazine or power-pack, or a combination of both. Therefore the weapon is at least an Advanced Combat Rifle or possibly a Gauss Rifle. Weapon. GZGs write up in Stargrunt II says they are gauss rifles.

Since the figures are wearing a standard field pack that doesn't appear to be a Personal Life Support System (PLSS), the mask on the helmet would appear to be a filter type mask, protecting the Legionnaire from atmospheric taint and inhaled chemical agents. It could also include a respirator function, allowing the Legionnaire to operate in very thin atmospheres.

Note that both ACRs and Cbt Env Suits are generally available at TL10-12.
At TL12 the Gauss Rifle becomes available and may replace the ACR.
At TL11 Combat Armour becomes available, but the Cbt Env Suit is still in use as a cheaper option.

So we have troops wearing armour that could be manufactured at TL6-12. Wielding weapons that could be manufactured at TL10-12.
Some of which are wearing either Filter Masks available at TL3+, Respirators or Combination Filter/Respirators both available at TL5+.

Therefore one could define the Legionnaires w/Kepi as:
TL10-12 Infantry equipped with Flak Jackets and ACRs, or
TL10-12 Infantry equipped with Combat Environment Suits and ACRs, or
TL12 Infantry equipped with Flak Jackets and Gauss Rifles, or
TL12 Infantry equipped with Combat Environment Suits and Gauss Rifles.

Helmeted and masked Legionnaires should be treated the same as the above but also equipped with a filter, respirator or combination filter/respirator mask.

They could be used as the same troops deployed in different atmospheric conditions. The former being deployed on worlds with atmospheres 5, 6 or 8 where they can breathe naturally, while the latter could be deployed to worlds with atmospheres 2-9.

I'm going to use the FSE as the Professional Soldiers Group (PSG) from Peter Trevor's landgrab write up on Efate. The write up calls for the PSG to be equipped at a higher TL than local forces, which means I need to lower the TL of Efate, but I don't want to change the UWP data, so I'll simply say that TL13 is the maximum possible on Efate, but most of the world makes do with TL10-11, uncommon TL12 and rare TL13 gear. The PSG are therefore equipped with TL12 gear with the possibility of some specialist systems/gear at TL13.

In Tomorrow's War terminology, TL12/13=TL3, TL11-10=TL2 and TL9=TL1 (at least they do on Efate).

Efate, according to Peter Trevor, has quite a few large arcologies because of the thin (tainted) atmosphere, in this case a lower O² concentration than normal. The PSG conducts operations both within these arcologies and outside in the thin atmosphere, therefore the helmeted and masked legionnaires represent the PSG on surface operations while those wearing Kepi's represent PSG troopers operating inside an arcology.

I'll work up TO&Es in a later post, probably based on Ken Pick's "Striker Zero" articles on the Freelance Traveller page.
