Background: Voltaire always wanted to join the army, on Mondi that meant the Mondi Colonial Army (MCA), a force controlled by the government of Liluri a whole parsec away. Since they were responsible for brutally putting down protest rallies supporting an Independent Mondi, he was reluctant to enlist in the forces of his homeworld's oppression. Fortunately, or unfortunately, when he was 18 years of age, a man named Dearg Doom raised and trained a local army in secret, with the intention of freeing Mondi from Liluri’s yoke. Voltaire enlisted straight away, and during the next four years fought in nearly every battle between the MCA and the fledgling Free Mondi Army (FMA), he learned to use carbines and sub-machine guns, but he really preferred his rifle, for its accuracy and range. During “The War” Voltaire was often employed as a sniper and saw a lot of combat; he also saw many of his friends and companions die. During the closing months of the war it became obvious to all, that the FMA was losing. Refusing to surrender they continued the fight, earning themselves the nickname “The Doom Guard” in the media. The war ended a few short months ago with, FMA being defeated in a final battle, in the hills north of the capital. Voltaire was one of those who melted away at the last, avoiding capture and death. He has been in hiding since, living the life of a homeless beggar, on the edges of startown. He still has his rifle, well hidden, and a small amount of cash, and is looking for a way off world, and will hire on with almost anyone.

Referee: Anyone trying to recruit mercenaries, or guards at the Liluri starport will encounter Voltaire Brown. He will present himself before the recruiter within 2 hours of the job being advertised. While he looks somewhat unkempt and down on his luck, he will behave very professionally and will even bring his own rifle. The weapon appears to be functional and immaculately clean, despite its obvious wear.
