Known Space
is
the name given to that region of space that is largely populated by
humanity. “Known” is a misnomer, as much of the region is only
partially explored. Many star systems are almost totally unexplored,
due
in part to the
focus of interstellar trade on a single world within any
given star system, the so called “main world”. Also,
perhaps, in part to the lack of a central authority directing
exploration and colonisation efforts. For
the most part these main worlds are largely independent; there being
no large interstellar polities, such as the Third Imperium, Zhodani Consulate, or
Aslan
Heirate, in
existence; Such
political entities are part of the background story of the holovid show
“Traveller” and its merchandise and spinoffs, which seems to be
so ubiquitous throughout known space. Oh...,
there have been past
attempts to create such star spanning empires,
and undoubtedly there will be others in the future, but the
realities
of interstellar travel and communication make such attempts
extremely unlikely
to succeed.
