   As a child Alben always wanted to be a hero, like the heroes in his favourite Tri-Ds. He tried to emulate them in every way possible. In doing so he unwittingly set himself a physical regimen, which would see him develop into a strong young man capable of sustained physical activity (STR-B and END-C). Following his heroes in other media formats also broadened his knowledge and aided his education (EDU-C). When he turned eighteen he went to enlist in the marines, like his favourite hero, “Jonan Shelobi”, but to his great disappointment he was rejected as unsuitable, precisely for that reason. Disillusioned and upset, he signed for the draft and was selected to serve in the Sl’Vorta Army. The Sl’Vorta Army (SVA) would be considered a wet navy by the standards of other worlds as it’s primary focus is sea borne operations in defence of Sl’Vorta.

    Still disappointed, but prepared to make the best of it, Alben applied himself diligently enough to his basic training, learning how to shoot and fight in close combat (Rifle-1 and Bayonet-1), and was trained as CommTech (Electronics-1); a role which he served in for several years before proving himself capable of and willing to accept greater responsibility. Alben was commissioned as a lieutenant after receiving officers training (SMG-1 and Tactics-1). Shortly thereafter he was again promoted, to captain, and given command of his own company (Leader-1).

Despite his earlier disappointment Alben found he had come to enjoy army life, while no longer trying to emulate his childhood heroes, he still sought to shape himself into his own type of hero. To that end he reenlisted for a second term of service.

    During his second term he undertook specialist training as a Forward Observer (Fwd Obs-1) and was assigned to a different company, where he was deployed as an attached specialist to various other units. Later in the term Alben was promoted to major and again given command of his own company. While in command he undertook a course in mechanics (Mechanics-1), more for his own personal interest than any job requirement. It was during this command that his desire to be a hero saw him make a costly mistake during a counter insurgency campaign, that mistake caused the deaths of a number of the men under his command and led to him being denied reenlistment.

    Since he couldn’t reenlist, he took advantage of the available education courses for discharged servicemen and women (Mustering Out Benefits Table +1 INT and +2 EDU). For his eight years service he was given a Mid Psg ticket, plus a severance package which, combined with his own savings, amounted to Cr10,000.

Referee: Despite the events of his last term of service, and despite his feelings of guilt for the death of his men, ex-Major Alben Turnett is still trying to be the hero he believes himself to be. This is why he can be found at the starport on Sl’Vorta looking for off-world mercenary work, or elsewhere if he’s already made it off-world. He’s looking for a contract which will enable him to form his own mercenary company, but failing that will readily accept any dangerous jobs that come up. Provided of course they fit his idea of being on the side of the ‘good guys’, he still wants to be a hero after all.
