Friday Night Firefight S01E03

Ok...usually Friday Night Firefight falls on every other Friday, but this Friday my normal RPG group cancelled, so FNF got stepped up a week early.

Last weeks game involved a Kra'Vak ground assault on a Planetary Defence Station. The NSL defenders knocked out two Kra'Vak mechs and inflicted a handful of casualties, while the Kra'Vak inflicted a similar number of casualties before play was halted at around Midnight or 1AM (I forget which).

The consensus this week was not to continue that game, the numbers involved made for a rather cumbersome turn sequence and we cannot leave a game standing until the following fortnight. Everything has to be packed up.

Thus the Kar'Vak fleet suffered a severe reverse as a combine fleet under UN command arrived in system to defend the colony. The Kra'Vak ground forces withdrew from the colony and have established defensive positions to the south.

This week, the girls had to go to bed early and my son went out visiting friends, leaving Jonathan and Myself to play.

Jonathan set up the table and I chose the nearer end to deploy from.

We opted for a short scenario involving a NSL Panzergrenadier squad (with attached Sniper) on patrol. The patrol route took them through the power station (the white booby looking things), around the further foot of the hill between the Power station and the village (the four brownish lumps mid right of the table), whereupon they spotted two wounded villagers in amongst the dwellings. The Squad sniper had climbed the hill to get into an overwatch position. Upon approaching the wounded villagers the squad came under sniper fire from the hill to the south (foreground). That sniper proceeded to pin the squad down with sustained accurate fire until the squad sniper was able to pinpoint his position and injure him. The squad suffered three casualties before this. Medical care stabilised two of them and got one back on his feet. The sniper turned out to be a FSE operative using stolen equipment. The scenario took approximately 7 turns.

A second scenario was decided upon, in which the same squad with one replacement grenadier was ordered to guard a disabled Hovertank until a mechanical team could be transported out to the site. We used the same board for this one. The NSL deployed into defensive positions around the vehicle (located in the village centre), placing the Sniper on the hill again. The NSL were in hard cover and in position.
Unfortunately for Jonathan his squad took a hit in Quality due to the replacement, and dropped to Green d6.
A Kra'Vak fist was dispatched to locate the vehicle, they wound their way between the hills in the foreground, while the sniper moved up to the crest of the closest hill and began sniping at the NSL squad. The NSL squad was rapidly depleted in numbers by the combined efforts of the Sniper and the rest of the Fist who had taken up position in the woods at the foot of the hills.
The Kra'Vak sniper slipped up and gave his position away, drawing fire from the NSL sniper. A sniper duel ensued with he NSL sniper having to withdraw and circle around to the southern hill on the left of the Kra'Vak Fist (Regular 2)and Sniper (Elite 3). Unfortunately he was wounded by the Kra'Vak sniper. By this time the NSL were down to the squad 2IC and one wounded grenadier in the Village. The Kra'Vak fist had two dead, with four soldiers still fighting and the Sniper providing overwatch.
With his 2IC shaken and pinned behind cover, I took this opportunity to introduce Jonathan to the Last Stand rule. Jonathan opted to try it and see if he could fight to the death, unfortunately he rolled a 5 instead of a 6, and the 2IC broke and ran, throwing away his weapon and stripping off his armour.

At this point we called it a night.

I presented the idea of a mini campaign involving the players controlling a squad or two each from a Panzergrenadier Company deployed for 6 months on one portion of then front. As part of the UN rescue force faces off against the Kra'Vak ground forces left behind. Players will be assigned a number of Resource Points (RP amount TBA), to be for reinforcements, squad loadout changes, etc. A number of scenarios will be devised, some will be repeatable. Each scenario will cost a number of RP and/or IP (Intelligence Points) to run. RP and IP can be accumulated by achieving objectives within each scenario. The final scenario will cost significant amounts of RP and IP and will be the final assault on the Kra'Vak HQ or some other suitably climactic scenario. The Kra'Vak (controlled by me) are also capable of spending and earning RP and IP. Should either side run out of RP then they have literally run out of everything, replacements, ammunition, food, water, etc. and must withdraw from the battle area, (possibly to fight on in another battle zone).

Message Ends

Five Alpha, out.
