Friday Night Firefight S01E02

"Alarm! Alarm! Das ist keine Übung. Unidentifizierte Weltraumflotte im Sternensystem gesprungen ist. Das gesamte Personal zum Dienst treten sofort an. Es besteht Urlaubssperre."

......................... Announced over every commstation in Steinhold Colony, 1820hrs 29 July 2189.

(Apologies for my terrible German; es tut mir Leid, aber meine Deutsch ist sehr scheisse. :) )

Five Alpha, over.

As it turned out this message was transmitted almost 8 hours after the destruction of the System Defence Squadron. By that time the enemy had already made it's way into the inner system.

The Alarm was broadcast immediately after the Kra'vaks tried to conduct an orbital insertion near the colony. This attempt was thwarted by the Planetary Defence Stations positioned in and around Steinhold colony.

Their next attempt involved a landing over the horizon, out of range of the PDSs.
Scout reports had the Kra'Vak advancing in numbers towards colony territory.

Oberstleutnant Hegener, officer commanding 41st Panzergrenadier Battailon, being the ranking military officer on planet, took command of the defence. Realising the defence depended largely on the continued operation of the PDS network, he formulated a plan to defend those stations from ground assault.

2nd Platoon, A Company was given the task of defending PDS 27,

Leutnant Stegmann was assigned company support elements to assist. These included 2x RAM Mortars, 2x RFACs, 2x Auto-GLs, 1x Sniper, 1x Forward Observer Team, additionally 2nd Platoon found itself accompanied by Feldwebel Kurt Inselmann and his Luftkissenpanzer "Helga", how Inselmann and Helga ended up here and not with the 5th Panzerbattailon is an odd story, better left for another time.

Stegmann deployed his troops in and around PDS 27 along the expected path of approach and dug them in. Here you can see the Panzergrenadiers deployed in their trenches and gun positions.

High on the further ridge (back-left) Stegmann has positioned his Forward Observers
Well forward on the left flank (foreground) are a squad of Fast Attack Fan Bikes, and the Platoons Powered Armour Squad.
Also on the nearer hills, he has positioned his company and platoon snipers.

Mortars are positioned well back behind the Station and the station housing.

Turn 1: The Kra'vak arrive. As the commander leads his clan towards cover beind a hill, they come under mortar fire and 2 Kra'Vak are killed, the first casualties of the battle.

As more Kra'Vak arrive the y are led into battle by the mechs, who come under immediate fire from the defenders. On the Kra'VAk right flank their very large mech engages the fan bikes, destroying two of the four.

The NSL Power Armour takes up positions in the woods and begins harassing fire on the approaching mechs.

End of Turn 1: Body count 2 each.

Turn 2: As the mechs advance followed by the infantry, two mechs are disabled by enemy fire. The one on the left by mortars and the one on the right by frie from the Power armour squad.
The NSL has drawn considerable attention to itself by taking out that mech, and as a result they come under fire from it's companion mech, one PA Trooper is obliterated by the an MDC round, while two others (including the squad leader are gunned down from above by the mech overlooking their position, while the squads Missile Gunner receives a nasty headache as a 25mm round fired from a sniper rifle carves a gouge into the helmet surface.

The mech on the hill comes under mortar fire, the mech suffered no damage and neither did the NSL sniper still in hiding near its feet.
The Fan Bikes lose another bike, the two remaining squad members take off with one them riding pillion.

A Kra'Vak sniper also locates the NSL Forward Observer team and injures the Observer in the team.
The large mech on the right flank pursues the Fan Bikes around the hill into the PA rear, where the fan bike is destroyed along with it's two crew. Leutnant Stegmann gets the PA squad on the line and orders them to assault the really big mech. Surprisingly they leave their two injured comrades in the woods and assault the mech.

(Unfortunately we had to stop play here, partway through turn 3. I can't keep the table as is, so I've taken photos of the setup and last positions. We will attempt to reset the battlefield in two weeks time and try and finish the scenario).

Five Alpha, out.
