Virraug/Urraug, part 2

So far I've pretty much done one squad of two fireteams each consisting of four Virraug/Urraug.

Captain Shakatak leads this squad and will be the overall commander when the rest of the force is ready for deployment.

I like the write up of these guys in Tomorrow's War: By Dagger or Talon.

Urraug/Virraug Basic Attributes
Troop Quality: D8
Morale: D10
Confidence Level: High
Supply Quality Level: Normal
Overall Tech Level: 2
On Grid? No.
Body Armour: Standard (1D)

Common Traits
Resistant to Pain,
Berserker (Involuntary)
Poor Initiative

I do, however, disagree with the weapons systems TW: BDoT assigns them, they've given them advanced ballistic weapons, a squad support weapon and a power glove. But while I was painting these, I noticed that they carry 5 different models of firearm; 2 longarms, 2 handguns and a BFG. I'm not including the HMG teams from the new support weapon pack. TW: BDoT lumps all the weapons, excepting the BFG, into the ABW category and doesn't differentiate between them, except to say that they carry a mix of energy and ballistic weapons.

Because the harness these guys wear seems inadequate for carrying a large number of projectiles I've come up with two options: either they are using ABWs and have poor supply quality, or they use LWS or EWS.

The most common weapon carried is this one which you can see in the following four images:
Weapon notes:
  1. The muzzle is huge so it's clearly large bore, either firing a large calibre projectile or wide aperture energy beam/bolt.
  2. It doesn't appear to have a stock, probably being used for snap fire at shorter ranges, rather than fired from the shoulder for greater accuracy.
  3. The box at the bottom could be a magazine, but since the figure doesn't have any pouches that big, he either doesn't carry a reload or the weapon has an integral magazine or power pack.
  4. The large combination barrel/muzzle shroud seems to indicate a large muzzle blast/flash.
  5. The little ridge at the top of the weapon, behind the shroud might be a scope, but since it is level with or lower than the shroud I'm thinking it's more of a mount point rather than a scope.
  6. Since it is the most common weapon amongst the figures, it must be the Virraug/Urraug equivalent of an assault rifle type weapon.

When I look at this weapon, I see a small weapon, at least in Virraug/Urraug hands, it's about as long as they are broad across the shoulders. It doesn't appear to have any sights worth the name, so accuracy is not that great. The muzzle opening is humongous, and the shroud overhangs the muzzle as if to stop any muzzle blast/flash from spraying upwards towards the firer. To me it seems to be some sort of close assault weapon, functioning very much like a shotgun, the shroud however seems intended to stop heat radiating upwards towards the firer, which might indicate an energy weapon. A plasma shotgun? Let's just call it an energy weapon system or advanced ballistic weapon with the characteristics of a shotgun and we'll keep the name 'Splatter' from TW: BDoT p.46.

Since this is their most common weapon, we can infer that these guys like operating in close environments: jungle, built up areas, starship interiors, etc. If forced to fight in more open terrain they will attempt to close the distance supported by the other weapons in the squad.

The next most common weapon is this one, there's one of these for every two 'Splatters'.
Weapon notes:
  1. The muzzle is comparable in diameter to human SAW type weapons.
  2. The figure holding it seems to be holding it like a Milkor MGL or RG-6 GL, there may be a short stock behind the figures arm.
  3. It appears to have a largish drum magazine forward of the receiver.
  4. There seems to be rear and forward sights.
  5. The barrel is enclosed in a shroud right up to the muzzle
  6. The second most common weapon with a 1:2 ratio with the 'Splatter' would seem to indicate either a GL or SAW.
This one looks more like a projectile weapon. The drum like magazine (if that's what it is) makes the weapon resemble a modern grenade launcher. Since I'm operating under the assumption that these aliens tend to prefer fighting in close quarters, a GL would be great for clearing out stubborn defenders, holed up in an urban environment.
MPGL (Multi-Purpose Grenade Launcher) TL: 2 Class: Med Type: ABW AP: 2 AT: 2M Standard Urraug/Virraug GL.

Now this thing is what the TW: BDoT calls a Swatter and has been statted out as a SAW, technically an autocannon. There's one per 8 figures. That's one per squad.

Weapon notes:
  1. The muzzle is about the same size as the MPGL, maybe a little bigger.
  2. The firing position seems to match that of the M56 Smartgun from Aliens or the Terminator's RBS-80 Phased Plasma Pulse Gun
  3. Either it has a half drum magazine on the underside below the forward grip or a box magazine behind the rear grip/trigger assembly, or both, or either one or both could be a power pack
  4. There is a possible forward sight (the dark grey protrusion on the light grey shroud) and maybe a motion scanner/tracker like screen between the two grips.
  5. The barrel is enclosed in a shroud, right up to the muzzle
  6. There is only one of these weapons per eight warriors.
Again either this is an energy weapon system or an advanced ballistic weapon. In either case it is used as a SAW with light anti-tank capabilities. Use the Swatter statistics in TW: BDoT p.46.

This thing is carried by only one figure, it is a little shorter than the Splatter, and the commander wields it one handed like a pistol. I think it should be regarded as a very heavy calibre pistol or perhaps shotgun, again this could easily be an EWS instead. Treat it like a pistol.

Last but not least are the heavy pistols, wielded by the other two leader figures, these could be energy weapons systems or advanced ballistic weapons. Treat them as pistols.

The big question is: are these guys carrying energy weapons or ballistic weapons. The only difference in game would be the level of supply for the troops, since their harness/webbing appears to be designed for carrying a small load of ammo. These guys either go into battle with very little in the way of ballistic ammunition, or they carry a reasonable amount of power packs for energy weapons. In either case they seem to want to have plenty of room for loot after the battle.

I'm not sure if the close assault weapons supported by one or two GL and a SAW/AT gun is a workable formation. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
