1,001 Characters #23: Fafnir "Stuff" Smith
23. Fafnir "Stuff" Smith 78B257 ex-Marine Age 26 2 Terms
Skills: Cutlass-2, Gambling-1
Benefits: Cr10,000, Cutlass.
Fafnir "Stuff" Smith signed on with a Deseret Navy ship, soon after his eighteenth birthday. He was taken to Deseret where he underwent Deseret Marine basic training, where he was taught how to wield a cutlass (Cutlass-1) and more importantly how to be a marine. He was to late take further instruction in the cutlass as well as employ his weapon in several boarding actions (Cutlass-2).
During long boring patrols he learned to play various games of chance to kill time (Gambling-1). He particularly enjoyed when the navy crew wanted in on the games.
Fafnir earned his nickname because he often forgot the names of things and when speaking about them would just call them "stuff". It seems to be his favourite word, at least among the relatively few words that constitute his vocabulary (combination of INT 2 and EDU 5).
When "Stuff" is gambling, he says he can see the patterns and just knows how to exploit them, but anything else is a bit of a struggle. Luckily when it comes to combat he has good instincts, because in combat he is a creature of instinct, there is little planning involved, and he just seems to know what to do.

Referee: One could not, under any circumstances, consider Fafnir an intellectual giant. In fact his limited intellect is the main reason for his discharge. His commander just figured it would be safer for him and the rest of his men. That being said, he has an uncanny ability to count cards and figure out odds.
Put a cutlass in this guys hands or sit him at a gambling table and he'll be in his element. Put him in any other situation and he's going to struggle.
He might be found at any class A, B, or C class starport. Looking around with a mildly confused look on his face. If approached he seems amenable to reasonable requests (PC's will have a +1 to any reaction rolls with "Stuff").
Players: I'm not really sure how to play this guy, perhaps a bit of Rainman/Forrest Gump, with occasional bursts of Errol Flynn-like derring-do?
