Galactic Geographic Animal Encyclopaedia: Dartmouth

The Mondian Dartmouth is a solitary carnivore native to Mondi 0402. It's habitat appears to be limited to several sets of ancient ruins on Mondi and the immediate surrounds. Which lends credence to the theory that the species is descended from a domestic species kept as pets by the former inhabitants. They are well adapted to their environment. Their skin is greyish black with light and dark patches breaking up their outline, serving as effective camouflage amongst the ruins. They will eat pretty much anything they can bring down, including humans. One of the interesting and dangerous features of this animal, is that it hunts by waiting in ambush and shoots its prey when it comes into range. Yes, that's right, shoots its prey. The dartmouth shoots a dart shaped tooth out of its mouth at its prey and it is fairly accurate. The dartmouth constantly grows these dart shaped teeth, and must launch them to make room for the next. Wary explorers may notice the telltale marks of launched darts in an area frequented by a hunting Dartmouth, when found it is advisable to retrace ones steps and try another route. Locals attest to the effectiveness of the dart, as being like a gunshot wound from a Body Pistol.
